Four Facial Mists That Aren’t Just Overpriced Bottled Water

Face mists may not be the most buzzy or controversial skin care products out there, but they can be surprisingly polarizing. People tend to fall into two groups when it comes to face mists: Those who can’t live without them, and those who think they’re basically just overpriced spring water.

Until recently, I fell into the second group. I thought facial mists were refreshing, sure, but mostly an unnecessary luxury. It wasn’t until my oily, acne-prone skin turned into dry-as-a-desert, still-acne-prone skin almost overnight that I joined the cult of the face mist.

Turns out, facial sprays are the easiest, most foolproof way to add moisture to your skin care routine. Is your daily moisturizer not quite cutting it? Do you break out from just looking at heavy creams? Try layering a few spritzes under your other products for a dewy, bouncy finish. You can apply them anytime, anywhere—at your desk, over your makeup—without having to touch your face (major bonus). Plus, today’s face mists come as jam-packed with active ingredients as your super-powered serum. Depending on the formula, a facial spray can lend a matte finish to greasy skin, set your makeup, shrink the look of large pores, and even protect your skin from sun damage and pollution.

Ready to come to the dark dewy side? I took some of AHAlife’s most-raved-about face mists for a spin and shared my honest opinions below.

Allies of Skin Molecular Saviour Mist

File this one under “better than your favorite serum.” Allies of Skin’s heavy-duty rosewater mist comes packed with actives, like niacinamide to brighten and battle acne and Lactobacillus probiotics to balance your skin’s biome. Like other niacinamide products I’ve tried, Molecular Saviour Mist cuts the time it takes my skin to heal from blemishes in half—I spritzed this over a freshly obliterated zit at night and woke up to find it almost invisible in the morning. If you’re convinced that face mists are a huge waste of money, this spray will convince you otherwise.

Linné Botanical Skincare Refresh Mineral Mist

Full of skin-nourishing minerals? Check. Squeaky-clean ingredients? Check. Feels like tiny angel kisses on your face? Check. Linné Botanical Skincare’s Refresh Mineral Mist is my go-to 3pm pick-me-up. Aloe and yarrow give it this uplifting herbal scent that makes a spritz feel like a whole sensorial experience. It might sound a little hokey, but I swear it has a noticeable grounding and revitalizing effect. Try storing it in your fridge for a super-cooling, post-workout treat.

OY-L Hydrating Facial Mist

If you believe less is more when it comes to your skin care, this OY-L’s simple spray might be your new best friend. Handmade in small batches from tightly curated botanicals, OY-L Hydrating Facial Mist is like a yoga class for my face; I can feel it releasing tightness and calming irritation almost instantly. It’s also worth mentioning that the bottle dispenses the finest, most weightless mist I’ve ever felt, making it excellent for setting and refreshing makeup (no huge droplets to mess up your look). And because the rosewater base is laced with lightweight oils like Abyssinian oil and prickly pear oil, it also keeps your face moisturized all day long.

Teadora Anti-Pollution Facial Mist

I’ve been a huge Teadora fan ever since their Revitalizing Red Clay Masque chauffeured the KP bumps off of my arms, so I was pretty excited to try this superfruit-infused facial spray. Designed to protect skin from environmental damage—think sun, pollution, the generally horrible air quality in NYC—it’s become an indispensable part of my morning routine. It dries quickly but leaves behind a glowy, well-hydrated finish—great for dry or mature skin types. If you’re looking for active ingredients and all-day hydration, you can’t go wrong with this Teadora’s Anti-Pollution Face Mist.
