As vital to our wellness as eating right, a good night’s sleep can be frustratingly elusive in modern life. Our Night Rituals series introduces you to women we find inspiring, and how they power down before bedtime. Hope you find some tips and tricks for sleeping tight.

Jenni Kayne, Designer, “All-Over-the-Place” Sleeper

Leave it to L.A.-based designer Jenni Kayne to have a positively dreamy bedtime routine. Since founding her fashion label at 19, she’s become the poster child for relaxed-yet-refined West Coast style. We’re huge fans of the earthy tones, organic textures, and polished minimalism in her designs (not to mention those iconic D’Orsay Flats). Not surprisingly, her nighttime ritual is a lot like her signature aesthetic: thoughtful, balanced, and just a little bit luxurious.
Below, we chat with Jenni to learn how she winds down at the end of the day.

Skin & Hair

“For face care, I wash my face with de Mamiel Restorative Cleansing Balm or Retrouve Luminous Cleansing Elixir. Following the cleanser, I spray a hydrosol on my face. I love Evan Healy’s HydroSoul line. Then I apply what many people might say it too many serums, but I love them, and they work for me. First, I use a reishi serum my acupuncturist Sherri Matthews recommends, followed by a stem-cell serum from the amazing facialist Terri Lawton. Then I use the three serums by Kristina Holey + Marie Veronique: The Intense Repair Serum, The Soothing B3 Serum and then I finish with their Barrier Restore Serum. I follow the serums with a face oil, which I alternate between one from Marie Veronique and one from Earth Tu Face. I also use Retrouve Eye Concentrate around my eyes. If my skin is feeling particularly dry, I will top off the regiment with a balm like Lacrème Beauté Bee Venom Beauty Boost or Lacrème Beauté Glow Cream.

For body, I lather my entire body in Nucifera coconut oil. I’ll also apply Evan Healy’s Whipped Shea Butter on my hands, feet or anywhere else that feels dry.

Once a week, I leave coconut oil in my hair overnight as a conditioning treatment. Don’t forget to sleep with a towel on your pillow when you try this at home! To get it out in the morning, I shampoo my hair once dry and then a second time wet. If it’s still greasy, I add a little apple cider vinegar to get all the excess oil out.”

“I love to sleep in a white linen sleep shirt or robe. It isn’t linen, but my favorite right now is my Sloan nightshirt. It’s super soft and cozy.”

“I try to stick to going to bed around 10pm. The key is to start with turning off your phone! Every night I do these three things for a peaceful night’s sleep: I always put Hope Gillerman Sleep Oil on my wrists and take a few deep breaths. I drink Natural Calm with Calcium just before I go to sleep, and I also put Ancient Minerals Magnesium Oil on my forearms. I also take a Cortisol Manager. For those times where I really cannot sleep, I will take a low dose of melatonin. I always drink water before bedtime and sometimes I’ll also have Tulsi tea.

Reading List

“I usually watch TV for an hour. It is my time to tune out and unwind. Currently, I am reading The Plant Paradox.”

Bedside Table

“I always keep a silver tray by my bed with Bag Balm, which I use as chapstick. I also have Land of Women Healthy Hands Cuticle Oil, a carafe of water, and a small piece of pottery with flowers.”
