Recently, headlines like “Doctors Have Finally Ruled Menstrual Cramps as Painful as Heart Attacks,” have been making the rounds—something many, many of us women have known since the first time cramps made us curl up on a couch with a heat pack and ibuprofen. PMS comes in many painful, uncomfortable forms and unfortunately, there’s no real cure. (Thanks, medical sexism.) For milder forms of PMS though, here’s something you can try: an adaptogenic hot chocolate elixir that’s just as delicious as it is nourishing.

Reishi and chaga are both anti-inflammatory mushrooms, making this the perfect beverage for PMS time, when our body is in a more inflamed state,” says Chinese herbalist and licensed acupuncturist Alyssa Melody. “Reishi also calms the nervous system and helps with irritability, insomnia and anxiety. With the addition of magnesium rich cacao, this drink can help soothe cramps, alleviate tension, and support a healthy flow. This potion can be consumed at any time of the month to help support hormonal balance, increased immunity, improved sleep quality and relieve stress.” Also, hot chocolate.

PMS Hot Chocolate
1 cup coconut or almond milk
1/4 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp reishi mushroom powder
1/2 tsp chaga mushroom powder
2 tsp organic cacao
1/4 tsp almond extract
1 tsp maple syrup or honey
1 tbsp collagen (optional)
1 tsp vanilla ghee
1 pinch of cinnamon

Warm up milk on the stove. Blend with remaining ingredients in a high-speed blender until frothy.
