It was in a small millinery shop in New York City’s East Village that Rod Keenan realized what he wanted to do with his life. He’d left his native Kansas to study fashion design at Parsons, but dreamt of couture, not ready-to-wear. “I wanted to do something that was more hands-on, that showed craft, that showed the human touch,” he says. Then he met Lola Ehrlich, the French-born owner of Lola Hats, and started spending so much time in her shop that he became an intern.
