Name: Tom McFarlan
Location: Los Angeles, California
Product: StarArc Astrology Art Portraits

“When I discovered how the geometric aspect pattern in every person’s astrological birth chart has a line-form pattern that’s unique to every person and that this geometric pattern is one of the primary ways in which an astrological birth chart is interpreted, I realized I was on to something,” says Tom McFarlan of StarArc. He certainly was—McFarlan’s astrology art portraits are completely one-of-a-kind and complement any décor.

What inspired you to create the Astrology Art Portraits?
I started with the intention to create an intrinsically personal art print that would be meaningful, unique in form to each and every person, and that would best be expressed with an innovative and modern graphic style. Astrology came to mind as a subject that was of intense interest to people so I started experimenting with different ways of visualizing astrological information.

How are the Astrology Art Portraits made?
After realizing the creative potential in the geometric aspect pattern that is the centerpiece of each individual’s astrological birth chart, I started to create hand drawn sketches of various ways to visualize this information. From there I moved my ideas onto the computer using various software tools to further refine my roughs. After I arrived at the final design, I started to research and test various types of fine art digital printing methods and papers. I discovered Giclée printing on canvas was far and away the best choice and eventually I found a fine art printer I could partner with who did amazing work and used environmentally friendly materials.

When a person orders a StarArc print we first calculate their astrological birth chart using astrological interpretation software that we have partnered with AstroGraph software to provide. From there we digitally draw each customer's unique geometric aspect pattern one by one with thick and thin lines and light and dark tones. Then the appropriate planet and zodiac symbols are placed around the outer circle of the design and finally style, color, size and option preferences are applied. At this point, we send the finished design to our fine art printer to print and ship out to the customer. We also include a very detailed astrological interpretation report from AstroGraph software with each print order in a digital PDF file via email. This report explains what the geometric aspect pattern that is featured in each print means, as well as, what the position of the various zodiac symbols in your print mean.

What was the big aha! you had while creating this product?
When I identified the unique geometric aspect pattern contained in every individual’s birth chart as an innovative and beautiful focus point for meaningful personal artwork.

Can you describe your creative process?
I believe in finding inspiration where no one else is looking, iterating my ideas in many different ways before I arrive at a final solution and then executing my final design with exacting attention to detail.

What do you love about what you do?
The initial spark of a clever idea and the prototyping process is my favorite part about what I do.

How would you sum up your aesthetic/design philosophy?
I believe that great design and art evolve from where beauty and meaning merge in what is often overlooked.

What are you working on next?
Based on our initial success, I’m working on an additional StarArc design style that will be released at some point in the near future. In the more distant future, I’m working on a new type of art print that will be created in collaboration with other designers. The online destination for this future art print brand will be

What would you like to do other than your current occupation?
I like living in the moment and at this moment I wouldn’t dream of doing anything else.
