Remove lid with a strong pull, placing one hand on the cast iron body and the other on the wood lid. Place peppercorns in cast iron reservoir. Replace lid. Hand wash using mild soap and a soft brush. Do not place in dishwasher.
Swedish foundry Skeppshult has been in operation since 1906 and continues to make their cast iron products by hand, according to ancient methods and traditions. All products start with raw iron, which is carefully heated to 2732 °F (1500 °C) in induction furnaces powered by electricity from wind and hydropower. The molten iron is cast in molds made from specially formulated sand—one of the few materials that can withstand such extreme temperatures. When the cast iron has cooled, the mold halves are separated and recycled to produce another mold (sand molds can be used only once and therefore each product is unique; no two are exactly alike). The cast iron object then goes through hand grinding and blasting to produce the proper structure.
