Handmade in Colombia, this comfortable and durable handmade cotton canvas hammock continues the tradition of resting suspended in the air which Latin Americans have been enjoying for centuries. The key to comfort is in the number of suspension cords, which, in a typical hammock, total about 20-30. In this hammock, this number is almost doubled, with each cord helping to distribute weight and mass evenly across the hammock for the feeling of weightlessness as you float away into sleep. The pure, untreated organic cotton feels soft against the skin, while reinforced, double-sewn edges lend the material tear-resistance. The organic cotton is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), meaning that the fabric contains at least 95% organic fiber; has been colored with non-toxic dyes, without the use of formaldehyde or other toxic substances; and was produced in a mill that enforces strict social and environmental standards, treating their employees and the earth with deep respect.
The hammock may be suspended between two stable trees, weight-bearing walls or a beamed ceiling, with a minimum horizontal distance of 8 feet and 10 inches (270 cm). Use this formula for hanging: the suspension height (y) should be approximately one half of the suspension distance (x), therefore y= x/2. If the distance between the suspension points is greater, the hammock must be mounted somewhat higher. Protect your hammock from wear by ensuring that it is high enough off the ground and not scraping or brushing anything below. If installed outside, take the hammock down in the evening to protect it from overnight dampness. The hammock can be machine-washed on a delicate cycle at a temperature of 86 °F (30 °C). Bind the suspension cords together before washing to avoid tangling. Line dry.
This organic cotton canvas hammock is handmade by the family-run La Siesta in Colombia, where the hammock has been nicknamed “cradle of the gods.” A museum in Bogota boasts a miniature hammock made of pure gold within its collections. The first written record of hammocks appear in the travel logs of explorers such as Christopher Columbus and Bartolome de Las Casas, both of whom made note of the use of the luxurious sleeping nets by the wealthiest indigenous inhabitants of modern-day Cuba, Bahamas and Haiti. La Siesta was begun in 1991 by husband-wife team Dorothy and Alex Grisar. Alex grew up in South America sleeping hammocks, and today the company prides itself as being hammock specialists. The couple run the business with their three sons and a small group of loyal employees.
