These lightweight towels are ideal for toting in your bag for a day at the beach or spreading out for an impromptu picnic. They have the same absorbency as a thicker towel while taking up a fraction of the space. The lightweight textile is a Turkish bath towel that has its origins in the hamam, or Turkish baths. The key to the high absorbency of the Turkish bath towel is in the weave. Long, cotton fibers are spun into a thin yarn that is then is woven to maximize the number of total loops—more loops means more areas for water to be retained. Because the towels are so thin and airy, they also dry quickly. Don’t hesitate to throw these in the wash time and again, as absorbency increases with each laundering. A set of goldenrod-colored stripes runs along the fringed edge of these oceanic blue towels. This towel meets the certification standards of Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), which are awarded by the International Working Group in conjunction with the International Labor Organization. Their certification means that the textile contains at least 95% organic fiber; has been colored with non-toxic dyes and not treated with bleach, formaldehyde or other toxic substances; and was produced in a mill that enforces strict social and environmental standards, treating their employees and the earth with deep respect.
Machine wash cold with a non-phosphate soap. For the softest towels, tumble dry low and remove promptly. Avoid fabric softeners, as they reduce absorbency. To maximize the absorbency of a towel, add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle, about every six weeks, to restore the towel to full absorbency. The vinegar removes any excess detergent, which can affect the towels’ absorbency. While machine drying will make the towel fluffy, do not overdo it, as the heat from the dryer can damage the integrity of the cotton. We recommend using a lower heat setting occasionally or alternating between air and heat drying.
This towel was made by Coyuchi, a textile company with studios set in the picturesque environment of the northern California coast. Their designers and makers are inspired by the visions of the surrounding environment, from sun-starched fields of foliage to rustic barns surfacing from moody gray fogs. Coyuchi’s mission and philosophy is to create comfortable, natural textiles that are produced in a way that will not harm the environment. All of their products are certified by international organizations as being woven from organic materials that are free of chemicals and harmful substances, and made by people that are respected with fair wages and treated well according to labor laws set by the International Labor Organization.
