This classic hanging tree swing was created from wood that was reclaimed from a 19th century building in Philadelphia. The swing seat features the concentric rings of old growth redwood, each line marking the passing of time. To protect this storied material, the swing seat is hand-finished with tung oil, which lends the wood a golden hue and makes the swing water-resistant. The wood swing seat hangs from two sturdy lines of manila hemp rope. This material is derived from the abacá plant, a species prized for being one of the strongest natural fibers. The rope has been tested to hold a capacity of 695 pounds, so kids old and young can enjoy the simple pleasure of swinging.
To hang the swing, first find a sturdy branch on a reliable, strong tree. Wrap the rope around the branch four times, making sure to leave at least 4 feet on the tail end as well as enough rope for the swing end. Loosely wrap the tail end of the rope around the swing end of the rope 4 times. Bring the remaining length of the tail end to the top of the loop and run it through the inside of each loop. Twist the loops tight around both the swing end and the tail end of the rope. Pull the tail end until the knot is tight. Wipe down the wood periodically to keep clean and dry. Condition with wood oil when necessary.
Husband-wife Margeaux and Walther Kent moved into a rambling 1800s Philadelphia house and began to forage for vintage items to fit the character of their old home. Calling upon Walter’s expertise in cabinet making and home restoration, they would make from mostly reclaimed materials anything that they could not find or buy, and begin to share these items with other homeowners through their line Peg & Awl. This swing was originally designed for their two children to enjoy.
