The front of this hand-stitched throw quilt is a large panel of indigo-dyed linen, which creates a striking contrast to the patchwork of natural linen and cotton on the reverse side of the blanket. Each panel is sewn onto the quilt with a Japanese running stitch, and the length of the stitches vary creating a visible indicator of the hands that made the blanket. The quilt will brighten up your bedroom, create a cozier couch, or transform a picnic in the park.
When you need to clean the quilt, it should be hand washed in cold water and line-dried.
Fait La Force is a design community in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Their name translates to “strength in unity,” and the team of 60 artisans work together to create leathergoods, accessories and quilts. Started by accessories designer Emma Allen in 2011, Fait La Force works to elevate traditional methods and slow craft processes. Allen has family in Haiti, and after frequent trips to the region, began to look for a way to engage the tradition of handcraft with natural materials. “We don’t seek to commodify the poverty or hardships of Haiti or the people we work with,” Allen writes. “For us, it’s just about creating something good, making things the right way, using natural materials, respecting the process and the people.”
