Award-winning designer Erika Lagerbielke created this decanter in collaboration with noted Swedish wine connoisseur Bengt-Göran Kronstam. The decanter allows wine to breathe, so that the flavor may fully develop. The decanter is a space where sediment can settle and separate for a pure, clean glass of red. A small, subtle spout at the top preserves the decanter’s streamlined design while allowing for clean, dripless pouring. Each decanter is expertly hand blown by artisans at one of the oldest glassworks companies in Sweden, Orrefors, which has been making glassware since 1726.
Clean decanters by filling them halfway with moderately hot water, a small amount of mild detergent, two tablespoons of white vinegar or ammonia and a cup uncooked rice. Swirl the rice around for a few minutes to remove residue, and drain. Then rinse well with moderately hot water and turn upside down to air dry on a rack. More stubborn stains can be removed by filling the container with warm water and dropping in a denture-cleaning tablet, allowing it to remain until the stain dissolves.
This Swedish glassware producer is named Orrefors, after the forest-nestled community where the workshops are based. With over 250 years of expertise in the art of glassmaking, their glassware has been collected and exhibited in dozens of museums, including the Copper Hewitt Museum in New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. This collection was designed by Erika Lagerbielke, who is renowned at Orrefors for designs that fuse a deep knowledge of spirits and wine with contemporary aesthetics and functionality. Her glassware has graced the tabletops of the Swedish royal family and discerning Scandinavian diners alike.
"Glass is my passion," Lagerbielke says. "I work to capture both rational and artistic qualities in the same design, a concept I call 'Poetic Functionalism.' When designing drinking vessels, understanding human desire is equally important as understanding the beverage and its sensory qualities. A great glass for wine or beer will give someone an enhanced experience of the drink, and also, I hope, create a moment of beauty through the sensual simplicity of the glass."
