A former architect turned furniture designer teamed up with skilled Nicaraguan craftsmen to create this modern take on a traditional toolbox. An interior tray holds small items, such as screws and nails, while a larger lower compartment stores tools, such as hammers and screwdrivers.
The wood pieces are fused using finger joints, also called comb joints. This type of wood joinery is resilient and unyielding due to its multiple meeting points. The upper tray and lid slot seamlessly through the handle for a streamlined appearance.
The toolboxes are made with 350 year-old Frijolillo wood (also known as Guachapele, Tabaca, Guamarillo or Samanigua, and found in Guatemala, Venezuela and Ecuador), which was felled during the destruction of Hurricane Felix in 2007. Frijolillo is known for its easy workability, smoothness to the touch and high durability, as it is often used in shipbuilding, railroads, flooring and general construction.
Lightly condition the tool box once a year or as needed with wood furniture oil, such as our Beeswax Wood Care & Finish. Soak for 24 hours before wiping off excess and buffing dry with a soft cotton cloth.
Designer Aaron Portiz has a background in sustainable architecture, and he brings these ecological considerations to his current furniture studio. His furniture uses materials sourced from responsibly farmed coffee and teak plantations, as well as felled wood salvaged from Hurricane Felix of 2007.
All of his furniture is handmade with a select group of skilled craftsmen in Nicaragua, just outside the capital city of Managua. Craftsmen work in fair conditions and are compensated ethnically with health insurance and fair wages. Currently, Aaron works with four craftsmen and four apprentices to manufacture his designs.
