New York maker Andrew McAteer created these slippers based on a pattern from a Civil War-era magazine he sourced from the Library of Congress. To help in the war effort, women were encouraged to sew slippers from leftover materials and send them to the United States Sanitary Commission for distribution to wounded soldiers. Following suit, Andrew used scrap leather from his workshop to form the natural leather outsole of the slippers. Similar to shoes during that time period, these house shoes have no designated right or left, as the slippers will stretch to create an individual fit.
These are intended as house or camp shoes, therefore walking on pavement should be avoided to prolong the life of the slipper.
The fit may feel awkward at first, but rest assured, the leather will form nicely to your foot and be comfortable within a few wears. If the slippers become scuffed or worn on the sides, switch feet to maintain even wear.
If desired, care for the leather by conditioning periodically with saddle oil or leather wax, such as our Beeswax Leather Conditioner.
An intrepid traveler, Andrew McAteer found that the available bags, carriers and accessories on the market didn't properly suit his on-the-go gear requirements, and so he began to design and make his own goods. Working out of a small workshop in Astoria, Queens, New York, Andrew creates beautiful, timeless products.
