why this product

Originally, wallets like these were used as banks. Today, these specially crafted accessories are made to fit your thickest stack of bills, with enough room to store your phone, keys and bank cards, while maintaining a clean aesthetic.  Made of deerskin, the wallet is extremely soft to the touch, but stands tough, as deerskin was used to link together the metal plates of samurai armor. The deerskin used for this wallet is vegetable tanned, with a smooth and pebbled surface that helps absorb and disguise the tiny scrapes that come from everyday use. Lined patterns at the corners are heat-embossed then hand painted at Postalco’s home studio in Tokyo.  The wallet zips open and has a spacious main compartment, a flat pocket for bills, two oversized card pockets, and a smaller zippered pocket that can be used for storing coins, additional cards, receipts or notes.  At 3.5 inches long and 7.9 inches wide, this wallet isn't suitable for sliding in fitted jean pockets, but it can be kept in a bag or easily clutched in hand. Comes in navy blue or dark red. Since these are hand-painted, colors may vary.

use & care

Postalco uses naturally cured and tanned calfskin leather. Like all leather, avoid exposure to wet surfaces. If wetness occurs, pat (don't rub) the wallet down with a soft cloth and leave it to dry in a cool shade.  The leather has already been treated, therefore it is not recommended to apply extra leather conditioner.  The inevitable scrape and surface wear that come with everyday use, will blend into the texture and become part of the wallet's unique patina. To help scratches blend into the leather, use a slightly moistened cloth and gently dab it over the entire surface.

production & design

Postalco sourced deerskin for its softness, strength and fine texture. Deerskin leather was used for clothing by American explorers and mountain men who needed clothes that didn't tatter in the woods. Its dependable strength also made it popular amongst the Japanese warrior class for bows and arrows, and also to link together pieces of samurai armor.   Mike and Yuri—the pair behind Postalco—work closely with the craftsmen who make their products, discussing every stitch and fold. Mike insists that the understated and precise construction of Postalco's paper and leather goods are of a caliber that can only be made in Japan.
