Armed with a background in sculpture, Thomas Callahan became interested in the engineering of bikes – their functional design and forward utility – after living in and riding around Portland, Oregon. (A good a place to develop a bike obsession.) He decided to make his own, then started building bikes for people who also wanted a sturdy, utilitarian ride with minimal, elegant design. Seven years on, Thomas is the man behind Horse Cycles, producing custom bikes out of his Brooklyn workshop. For this KM exclusive, Thomas used 4130 steel True Temper tubing (also once found in Tour de France and Giro d’Italia racers) to build the strong yet lightweight frame. The single speed coaster brake system – along with TIG welded inconspicuous joints – creates an elegant, streamlined look and keeps you zipping along. Lugged fork crown and hand-carved seat cluster. The cruiser comes with Brooks leather handle grips and matching leather saddle. The copper badge (also used by galleries and museums as name plates to identify artwork) can be customized with an engraving up to five letters. The City Cruiser normally takes up to six months to build in the workshop, but Thomas is expediting all KM custom orders to be ready in 3-4 weeks. For a behind-the-scenes look at the Horse Cycles workshop, read our Field Note.
For the leather handle grips and seat, avoid rain, moisture and other damaging elements. In the event that the leather and cork tape should need replacing, the steel clamps, which hold these strips in place, can be removed with ease. For storage, see the matching Reclaimed Oak Bike Stand.
Inspired by the classic and lightweight design of turn-of-the-20th-century bikes from England and France, Thomas Callahan uses contemporary, performance-based materials to build his city tour bikes. Horse Cycles, his Brooklyn-based company, uses American-made materials whenever possible.
