A craftsman in Wisconsin originally created his own brass buttons in order to add authenticity to his capote (pronounced “kuh-pote” and rhymes with boat), or blanket jacket. The capote is a wrap-around, hooded coat made from either wool blankets or animal hides that was worn by hunters, frontiersmen and voyagers in cold climate regions of Canada and the Great Lakes area of the United States during the mid-19th century. The brass buttons may also be used for leather jackets, winter coats, shirts or bags.
Over time, the pure brass will develop a patina unique to you. Many prefer the individual finish that occurs over time and with use. However, if you wish to prolong the sheen of the brass, clean the buttons after touching them, as natural oils from your hands will hasten the development of patina. To fully restore the original brass finish, a brass or copper polish may be used.
Founded by Tedd D. Cash, this American rifle and musket parts metalworking company has been in operation since 1968. They aim to create musket and rifle parts that are high in quality and true to antique gun history. In 1981, employee Scott Pobjoy began working and training under Tedd as a high school student, until he eventually took over the company in 2005. Scott now makes all the products and runs the company along with his wife, daughter and son in Wisconsin.
