Kick your feet up into the warm summer winds. This swing is made of sustainably harvested black walnut, sourced in New York state. The breadboard ends are held in place with strong sliding dovetails, allowing the wood to be joined for free swelling and shrinking with changes in moisture.
The swing comes with manila rope leads, which are tied in a traditional hangman’s knot and seized with copper. The dark colored black walnut infuses with lighter wood for a beautifully soft blended finish.
As the swing's creator, Casey Dzierlenga, told us, “I have always been interested in time-proven methods of building. Old-school woodworkers took a lot of pride in using these kinds of solid joints and techniques, and I get a lot of satisfaction applying them to simple everyday objects.”
To ensure the swing stays with you a lifetime, protect by applying furniture wax or silicone-based polish to the surface twice a year. Like most wood, the swing tends to gray after being exposed to UV rays from the sun, but keeping it oiled can help to keep its luster longer. Try coating with our Skidmore's liquid beeswax woodfinish, which can be applied with a cloth, and left on for a couple hours to soak in. Buff up whenever the swing starts drying out.
As for hanging, we can give you tips (in the next paragraph), but please keep in mind: We're not liable for how and where you choose to hang the swing, nor if the swing is being used in a careless manner. By purchasing this swing, you agree that you are responsible for how the swing is hung, inspected and any other risks associated with its use. (See disclaimer below).
And now, onto the advice: Look for a tree branch that's sturdy and living. Make sure it's high enough off the ground. Once you've selected a branch, tie the rope to it (a rolling hitch knot is supposed to be the best). Tie the swing to the rope at the desired height, and repeat on the other side. (Rope not included.)

To achieve thickness, the wood is first cut to length and run through the planer to form two smooth faces. The edges of each board are passed through the joiner, forming a perfect right angle to the two faces. Boards are then ripped on the table saw to correct dimensions and materials are chopped away using a collection of blades in preparation for cutting the delicate dovetails.
Each board ends are then driven over the router table, which is outfitted with a special dovetail bit. The end caps receive a reverse "mortise" treatment on the router table, so that they can easily slide over the dovetails to be glued in place. Once the glue sets, the end caps are flush-cut using a Japanese saw, and the swing is rough sanded. Top edges are cut to a bevel, using an angled blade on the table saw.
For the final finish, holes are drilled and the entire swing is coated with a beeswax/oil. After the oil has dried, each swing is buffed and tied up using 3/4 inch manila rope.
