The first trenchers, derived from the French word tranchier meaning “to cut” or “to carve,” were originally made from stale, hard bread as a presentation board for food. Pewter and metal eventually replaced the bread trenchers, displaying food in a formal dining table setting. Our circular Black Walnut trencher is designed for the modern-day kitchen in mind. Use it as a platform for carving ribs, roasts, steaks, and other fare or as a serving board for cheese and appetizers.
The dip in the wood of this trencher allows you to slice meat, dice tomatoes, crack open a lobster or serve pot roast without worry of spillage or sogginess.
The Black Walnut is finished with a food-safe mineral oil. For maintenance, you can wipe down the board with a dab of corn oil on a paper towel whenever it starts to look dry or pale. This can be done once every two weeks, or as often as needed to preserve the wood's luster.
Wash the board with warm soapy water and wipe down right away. Cannot be put in the dishwasher.
These trencher boards were designed and turned by a Scottish engineer who fell in love with Vermont and made it his home. A longtime wood hobbyist, he made his first trencher board in 1967, and the piece still gets daily use in his kitchen to this very day. With a growing reputation and increasing sales, he expanded his solo operation to open a factory. He currently employs eight full-time and four part-time craftsmen. Some of them have been with him for over 25 years, woodturning and witnessing the growth of this small business.
Crafted from black walnut, this circular cutting board features a gently sloping trench designed to collect juices while you carve your meat, keeping them separate from the rest of your work area. Flat reverse side doubles as a flat cutting board or an elegant serving platter for cheese, fruit, or hor d’oeuvres.
