This 100% cashmere stole is made by a family-run Scottish brand that was established in 1797. The company first set up shop in Elgin, near the River Lossie, which at that time powered the watermills. Today, the mineral-rich water is still used to clean and soften the raw cashmere fibers. The process for creating this cashmere stole begins during molting season (which can last from March until May), when Kashmir goats shed their winter coats and the wool is collected. The makers select what they judge to be the best Kashmir goat fibers and have it sent to the mills. The fibers then go through a 12-step process – from dying to carding to spinning to weaving to knitting and more – before the product is finished by hand.
When you first wear your new stole, pilling may occur. This is not a defect, but simply small balls of tangled, loose fiber that can easily be removed by hand or a sweater comb. Dry cleaning is recommended.
Since 1797, this Scottish company has been run by just two families. It offers free tours of the mills and welcomes over 130,000 visitors each year. When the brand first set up shop in Elgin, its watermills were powered by the nearby River Lossie. Today, electric powered machinery is used, but the mineral-rich water still cleans and softens the raw cashmere fibers.
