why this product

Plugging appointments, vacations and birthdays into phones just doesn’t have the same tangibility as a paper calendar. This calendar extends the visual layout of time before us, so you can zoom in on your day or scale out on the month, as you plan your business meetings and count the weeks to your next trip.

Each case is two-toned and comes in black/gray or dark and light blue.

The cases are made in Japan, and the hard pressed cotton uses lightly waterproofed fabric woven on looms that make canvas tents, so you know it can withstand a few punches, and wears beautifully like leather. The set of weekly calendar inserts go through the year 2014.

Designed after a classic 1950s folio, but sized down to be compact and easy to carry around. At 3.9 x 8.8 inches, this is about the size of a standard envelope, and will perfectly fit a sheet of A4 paper folded into quarters.

An elastic band keeps the case closed, and don’t waste time looking for a pen there’s an extra long pen slot nestled inside.

The calendar case has 2 slots to slide in your inserts of choice. The accordion-style weekly calendar lets you view 8 weeks at a time, with a week on each panel and little blank space for memos. A 3-year calendar adds an even longer perspective to your time. A set of three narrow notebooks sized for the calendar case has Postalco’s thick mesh-graph paper—great for jotting down lists and ideas before they slip away.

use & care

The case has two slots for inserts, but we provide three kinds of inserts (choose the two you like best, or cram them all in): see the page for the weekly calendar, the 3-year calendar and the mesh-graph notepads.

The pressed cotton colors lighten with use, and the weave will become more apparent, which is part of its beauty. The fabric is treated with a light water resistant coating. If the cover gets wet, pat dry with a soft cloth. If the elastic band breaks, contact Kaufmann Mercantile for a replacement.

production & design

The Postalco calendar is based on the cho seiri calendar invented by a Japanese economist. It unfolds accordion-style so that long periods of time can be viewed and processed at once.

Postalco's simple dark gold logo, a carrier pigeon, is printed subtly inside the case.

Currently based in Tokyo, Postalco originated in Brooklyn, New York. Husband-and-wife team, Mike and Yuri Abelson, a product designer and a graphic designer, respectively, began with a love of the international transport of mail and Japanese craftsmanship. This soon evolved into an exploration of the beauty of paper, with its smooth texture and tangible warmth, and their skills and fancies converged seamlessly into Postalco. Their current store is on the 4th floor of a quiet building in a low-key Tokyo neighborhood, a location befitting their understated, clean sense of style.
