Few meaningful conversations have ever been exchanged over a cold spot of tea. That's one place where this tea cloth comes in. Originally designed for laying across the tea tray to catch spills and crumbs of scone, the linen tea cloth can also be laid across the top of the teapot to prevent heat loss and encourage at least another half hour of important talk. As traditional tea cloths are, this towel is made from Irish linen, in a mill in County Down, Ireland, that has been producing Irish linen for over 50 years. Different from most cloths, Irish linen gets softer and stronger the longer it's around. This is because of the linen's inherent bond with water. The flax plant, first of all, from which linen is made, grows best in humid climate and moist soil. And the very first process in the production of linen fibers is the soaking of the harvested flax in pools of water. This is in order to remove bark and access the flax fibers. This association with water and moisture continues over time as linens are repeatedly washed. It's this relationship which means the linen develops further over time, the more you use it.
This tea cloth works just as well with coffee service as with tea, or can be spread across any platter for serving. Pictured with Enamelware mug The linen will develop more character over time, and can be machine washed on cold, warm, or permanent press (temperature shouldn't go over 30C or 86F). Since linen naturally dries quickly, spin and line drying is the best way to go. If you throw it in the dryer, this can be too hot and over-dry the fibres, making ironing more difficult.
31 Chapel Lane is a two-person team, Damien and Joy, who started their linen business to reinvigorate the production of Irish linen that has meant so much to the Irish country for many centuries. All linens at 31 Chapel Lane come from a number of mills throughout Northern Ireland. They're all located close to where Damien grew up, so he and Joy visit the mills quite regularly to search out fabrics for upcoming collections and collaborations. All products are sewn by hand in Ireland, and most of them are handmade by Joy. The stages of 31 Chapel Lane's production process begin with the choosing of the color palette and tone for each collection, the selecting and testing of fabrics based on weight, color, potential and natural characteristics, and finally the production itself followed by quality testing.
