why this product

Based on the design for the traditional trug invented in 1829 by Thomas Smith of Herstmonceux, East Sussex, England, this contemporary version is made from weatherproof Latvian and Finnish birch wood, merging a traditional, functional design with an updated look and feel that is clean and simple.

Though the materials are different from the 1829 original, the same basic production process remains the same. Latvian birch plywood is bent and shaped into the handle and trug rim, while boards of thick Finnish plywood (the same ultra-durable wood once used in Mosquito airplanes) are shaped into a sturdy base. The entirety is then sanded for a smooth and sleek finish, ensuring a splinter free gardening session.

Durable and light enough to cradle on your arm while you gather greenery in the garden, these trugs also make a delightful tabletop centerpiece when filled with flowers, or an attractive repository for your odds and ends.

use & care

The shallow, wide shape of the Rothers Garden Trug makes it equally practical for toting bulky produce from the garden or transporting delicate blooms without crushing them. Lightweight enough to be carried over your arm to keep your hands free for picking, it’s also strong enough to withstand heavy loads. The trug has many uses beyond the garden: it can be a handy organizer to confine clutter.

Caring for this trug is easy, as it’s made with weatherproof wood and designed to get dirty (after all, this wood was once used on all-weather British aircrafts). You can extend the life of the wood by applying our Beeswax Wood Care & Finish and by not submerging the trug in water. When you’re ready to store your trug for the season, simply brush off any dried bits of mud and place it on your tabletop as a centerpiece or beside the couch as a magazine rack.

production & design

The Modern Rothers Garden Trug is based on the design for the Traditional Royal Sussex Trug, but utilizes Latvian and Finnish birch plywood for a clean, minimal look.

To make the rims, three pieces of weather- and boil-proof Latvian birch plywood are nailed together to make a half rim, boiled to soften the wood, molded, and then placed in a drying rack overnight. The next day, the two halves of the rim are trimmed and joined using rust-proof solid brass pins. The handles are made similarly, though from one single length of plywood instead of two.

Once the rims and handles have dried, they’re ready to be screwed together using solid brass screws, and finally joined with the Finnish birch plywood boards that form the base of the trug. Excess wood from the boards is trimmed, and the trug is hand-sanded, stamped, and signed.

Per European Law, Thomas Smith replaces each birch tree that is cut and harvested with two more trees.
