Different than the kind of canvas bag you might get free for buying a magazine subscription, this carryall will allow you to carry heavier loads, more frequently, with greater comfort. Canvas is a strong, coarse fabric, chosen for jobs where sturdiness is required. But this bag is made of an even stronger material--duck--a canvas with two yarns together in the warp and a single yarn in the weft, which means the threads are even more tightly woven. The weight of duck fabric runs in reverse by number. Duck #6 (13 oz.) is used for this bag, which means it's heavier than a #8 or 10. #6 duck is typically used for large boat covers and heavy work clothes. The bag, reinforced with a duck canvas bottom, also stands up on its own, even without anything in it. The boxed bottom, the manufacturer told me, is sewn with a sturdy double stitch nylon thread, available in the same color as the bottom. If the canvas tote will be used for the heaviest of missions, the army green canvas bottom comes recommended.
Use this tote for heavy duty household activities (like laundry), general shopping trips, or when shopping for groceries. The 6" tote handles should hang comfortably from the arm with no ground drag. The boxed bottom supports the contents of your tote, and prevents weathering. If you spill anything on it, just toss it in the wash (on cold for the colored bottoms so they don't bleed). The unwaxed exterior makes it easy to keep clean and fresh for use. To dry, hang or flat dry--no dryers.
Steele Canvas has been manufacturing high quality canvas baskets, buggies, hampers, and bags since 1921. Renowned for their rough and tumble reliability, the company is a favorite of heavy duty industries. Of late, the company's durable products have found an additional home: the household. Steele Canvas products are often used to protect large laundry loads and groceries. The Massachusetts company is family run by John Lordan, his wife Sib, and their sons Paul and Chris. Company members are close knit--its not uncommon to see everyone playing cards at lunch. Many even remember when Paul and Chris used to visit the office 25 years ago and fool with the tools. All products are U.S.A made in the company's Chelsea, MA headquarters.
