There are few fashion accessories with lifesaving potential. That is, aside from a belt, a pocketknife necklace, and Breton stripe socks. Introduced in 1858, the navy and white stripes of these socks - known as the Breton stripe—was designated as the uniform for all French Navy seamen in Brittany. The vividly striped uniform made sailors easy to spot if they ever fell overboard. The original design featured 21 stripes, one for each of Napoleon’s victories. The Breton stripe caught none other than Coco Chanel’s eye in 1917, which she then launched in her nautical collection. The Breton top became a symbol of haute-bourgeois loveliness during the pre-war Riviera years. The Armor Lux brand is still one of the oldest manufacturers coming out of France, and has since become a primary producer of Breton stripe sweaters, blouses and accessories. The socks are a comfortable soft cotton blend with a slightly elastic cuff. They pull up nicely and hit at mid-calf. Make a great dress sock that won't "go overboard."
Wash and care for these as you would any pair of fine dark socks. Machine wash with darks in cold water. Tumble dry.
Walter Hubacher, of Swiss-German origin, began Armor Lux in Quimbley, France because he wanted to challenge the world with making high quality products in an ethical way. He has been using the same techniques and fabrics since the start in 1938 , as the company is known for its luxurious rendition of traditional nautical wear, a fad that started for its utility but is most known for being a classic. Armor Lux is dedicated to sustainable development and fair-trade. The company monitors its manufacturing and production of fabrics to guarantee their impeccable quality. They sell products that meet the French and European regulations when using products and chemicals that threaten our health. Armor Lux values quality, innovation, and ethics.
