Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 - 1832) was a German writer and statesman who was keenly involved in studies of natural science. He wrote several works on morphology and color theory. This Plate IX monograph reproduction is from Goethe's Theory of Colours, which he considered his most important work. He characterized color as a dynamic interplay of light and darkness, where science meets art.
