Winner of the 2011 Brit Insurance Design of the Year Award, the Plumen, developed in London, works like other flurescent bulbs, using 80 percent less power than conventional while lasting eight times as long. Named for a plume—a bird’s show feather used to attract attention—it does just that. It is made of two graceful curves of glass that are compelling from every angle. The designers also integrated a few technical adjustments to improve the quality of light—which is warm and closely mimics incandescents—and the ignition time.
