We love New York City. Wouldn’t live anywhere else. And while we’re all for wearing our feelings on our sleeve, those I Heart NY T-shirts have always seemed a bit touristy. We prefer a more subtle approach, like these recycled metal Controlled Chaos rings, in silver or gold, from Olga Nemcova and Alexandra Tavel of October Anniversary. Inspired by NYC’s legendary graffiti artists, they’re a freeform take on the street art that adorns Gotham. Yet despite the urban vibe, says Tavel, “Our jewelry is very much inspired by nature. Living in NYC, you don’t have much nature around you, so the buildings and the fleeting stories captured on them through graffiti take on this role. The Controlled Chaos rings represent what New York means to us. Within the structured buildings and grid of streets, excitement and chaos are confined.” Designed to be adjustable, the rings are made using a wax mold casting and are one size fits all.
And because underneath their gruff exteriors New Yorkers have hearts of gold, October Anniversary is also a socially responsible company. “We use recycled metals that are sourced from eco-friendly factories and complete a full circle of social and environmental change by donating 10 percent of profits to Happy Hearts Fund, a foundation that helps children after natural disasters,” Tavel continues. “We sustain the environment and help those that are victims of it.”
