Trend alert: Lace is everywhere this season. From New York to Milan, designers lavished it on dresses, blouses and every other garment they could think of. But while we like a little frill as much as the next person, we appreciate that it’s not the easiest fabric to wear—no one, after all, wants to invite comparison to a doily. So what’s a fashion-loving girl to do? Carry this stunning minaudière from Fiona Kotur, that’s what. Made of heavy black guipere lace that’s been layered over a subtle metallic fabric for added depth and texture, it’s both bold and very refined.
Kotur, a former Ralph Lauren designer who was instrumental in launching Tory Burch, debuted her namesake collection in 2006 after discovering a cache of vintage brocade at a Hong Kong mill (the line is now carried at Bergdorf Goodman, Harvey Nichols and Browns). The designer knows all about the impact the right fabric can have. “I like the graphic nature of this lace and its hand feel—it’s quite dimensional, so not as fragile as other laces can be,” she says. Once she found the material, Kotur continues, the design for the bag (which boasts a handy chain shoulder strap and is large enough to fit a smart phone and all your evening essentials), came together in her head within seconds. “The only challenge was how to deal with the negative space—so we backed it with the metallic Burma suede.” Genius solution, genius bag. We know what we'll be carrying to this season's holiday parties... Launching online exclusively at AHAlife.
