Khunu founders Aaron Pattillo and Julian Wilson were traveling on the Tibetan Plateau in the Himalayas, staying with yak-herding families when they noticed that their hosts were principally interested in the yak's coarse outer hair. Meanwhile the softer down wool just blew away in the wind. That's when the American and the Brit had their "Aha!" moment. Why not make products using the lighter yak wool while providing herder families an additional source of income? Returning home with bags brimming of wool, the men had no clue that they were at the rudimentary stages of what would eventually become Khunu and its signature fabric.
