We love sending holiday cards to friends and family. When you can’t be there to spread the holiday cheer, let a chic and special note do the talking, right? Now imagine if that card could also help an orphaned, under-resourced child finish their education, thus altering the course of their life forever?
Enter Goods for Good, an organization that matches surplus goods with the needs of orphans and other at-risk children in Malawi. Working with local Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), Goods for Good has established a number of initiatives to help over one million orphaned Malawi children stay in school and progress their lives, like the Tailor-in-Training program, which repurposes new and unused surplus fabric from the fashion industry for vocational training programs in Malawi, helping young adults learn the craft, and providing school uniforms for community children.
For the second season, Goods for Good and fashion label Vince are celebrating their holiday card initiative—a great way to support the cause and score stylish, eco-friendly, specially designed greeting cards for everyone on your list. Illustrator and graphic artist Alessandra Olanow has once again lent original designs to the project, which also features cards by Meir Srebriansky, and Sloane Madureira, among others.
Available online in an e-card version, the cards can also be found in all 16 Vince retail stores. The best part? Merck has agreed to match every dollar raised through this initiative up to $50,000. Here’s what that can mean for an under-resourced child: as little as $16 provides a student with school necessities for all eight years of primary school, and $300 provides 500 nursery school children with uniforms and antibacterial soap.
“These children face myriad challenges, but a lack of access to education is a big one. They must have the opportunity to receive an education if there is any hope for improvement,” said Melissa Kushner, founder and Executive Director of Goods for Good. Currently, 50 percent of all Malawi children drop out of school before fourth grade. “Many children can't go to school because they have no one to provide something as basic as a pair of shoes, a $3 school uniform and a pencil for them.”
That’s right, the things we have multitudes of in our own lives (shoes, pens, notebooks, clothes) are life-changing goods for children in under-resourced areas of the world. But thanks to Goods for Good, items that would normally go to waste can make all the difference for a child whose opportunity is stunted due to limited resources. And this holiday, you can spread the mission of progress and change with a simple holiday card.
Feels really good, doesn’t it?
