Clock watching is not usually a good thing. But with the Lotus Wall Clock, it’s both hard to avoid and completely understandable. Unlike most timepieces, which just hang there looking the same day after day, the Lotus Clock, which comes in white or maroon, can be changed to suit your mood and décor. Fan the leaves out to make a flower, fold them in to create a more abstract design, or fashion them into a propeller. Who knew telling time could be so much fun?
Shape-shifting abilities aside, the Lotus Clock is built to last. Moving the powder-coated aluminum petals is as smooth as turning the steering wheel of a Bentley—which isn’t surprising, as the clock is made at the same British factory that produces both Bentley and Aston Martin cars. Dripta Roy, its designer, created a special mechanism that allows the petals to move easily and not wear down, no matter how many times you rearrange them. In fact, the petals are hand-sanded and the mechanism assembled piece by piece to ensure the free-flowing result that makes this timepiece so special—and so much fun to own, as you can see in our exclusive video. “The longest time in the design process is spent creating an object that people can play with and have fun with; something that will spark a conversation,” he says.
It’s the sort of thoughtful detail that the London-based Roy specializes in. All in all, we like to think of this unique clock as an especially stylish way to, ahem, carpe diem.
