About Deepa Gurnani

The Deepa by Deepa Gurnani brand was conceived in the dreams and passions of husband and wife partnership, Deepa and Jay Lakhani. While studying fashion at London’s prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, Deepa beaded couture pieces for Alexander McQueen, Emanuel Ungaro and Fendi. Her passion is to develop innovative techniques, with an uncompromising couture-approach to finishing. Each Deepa Gurnani piece is created by hand in India, by the finest artisans using embroidery techniques passed from generation to generation. High welfare standards and a nurturing attitude to all employees are maintained worldwide.

Lady Mary Wishes She Had These

We’ve got a big crush on these Downton-esque embroidered baubles from Deepa Gurnani. Bejeweled, bedazzled and utterly bewitching, they’re perfect for whenever you’re craving a little sparkle.

BY Nancy MacDonell

Inspired by three giants of 1920s fashion—illustrator Erté and couturiers Paul Poiret and Coco Chanel—the husband-and-wife team of Deepa and Jay Lakhani design lavish, hand-embroidered accessories for modern glamor pusses.

The Whole Story

The marriage of Deepa and Jay Lakhani brought together not only two lives but enough fashion experience to—literally—launch a brand. While studying at Central Saint Martins Deepa beaded one-of-a-kind pieces for Alexander McQueen, Emmanuel Ungaro and Fendi. Jay, meanwhile, studied jewelry design at F.I.T. under the head designers from Tiffany and Bvlgari before going on the work with some of the biggest names in the business. So it should come as no surprise that one year after their 2005 wedding they attended Henri Bendel’s legendary casting call with for new designers and made the cut, marking the official launch of Deepa Gurnani.

The Products

All Deepa Gurnani designs are handmade in India by expert artisans, which means that no two are exactly alike. Each piece is constructed with couture-level care using embroidery techniques that have been handed down from generation to generation. The materials used include crystals, brass beads, chains and metallic wires. “Our pieces are finished with a mantra of, ‘beauty inside and out,’” says Jay. “Each piece is lined with a pretty print or great finish, so the piece feels complete from top to bottom.”

Five Minutes With Deepa Gurnani Co-Founder Jay Lakhani

Q: What quality about your brand or product are you the most proud of?

Jay Lakhani: The part that gives back! We love working with these skilled artisans in India to keep the craft of hand embroidery alive.

Q: If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?

JL: A brand is built with a team that shares your vision. One person can't do it all, no matter how hard they try. It's all a labor of love that is worked on together, so just start trusting others.

Q: Is there something you have to do every day without fail?

JL: Meditate. Taking 30 minutes out of our day to stop and realize how blessed we truly are.
