Virginia Chiarelli, a native of Zimbabwe, and Richard Taylor, a British fashion designer, met and fell in love in Florence, where they were both working. But it wasn't until they took an African safari that they got the idea to launch Beast of Burden, a made-to-order exotic skin handbag line that gets its skins right from the source: the Nile, where the best crocodile skins in the world originate. Beast of Burden then tans and dyes these sustainably sourced skins with vegetable dyes before sending them to Italy, where skilled artisans use the skins to painstakingly craft each bag. Every detail, from the traditional African textile linings and Italian calf accent leathers and canvas to the solid hardware, is luxurious and crafted to last a lifetime. Out of Africa and made in Italy, these exceptional bags fuse together two cultures-to carry one is to be part of its journey.
