Our favorite part of Christmas—besides the gifts—is the fragrant, glowing Christmas tree. On a more symbolic (read: adult) level, trees are also life-affirming symbols of growth and renewal. All this is what designers and married couple Alissia Melka Teichroew and Jan Habraken had in mind when they created their brilliant Tree Hooked Coat Rack, a modular system of wall-mounted steel hangers that are shaped like stylized branches. Tree Hooked is an invitation to get creative: The 22-inch pieces can be arranged in endless variations displayed vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. They come in black, white, apple green or silver and can be mixed and matched to your heart’s delight. “It’s the first product we made together,” says the Brooklyn-based, Dutch-born duo. “We wanted to celebrate our marriage with a collaboration. A tree-inspired product seemed like the perfect solution. After all, marriage is the bringing together of two family trees.” It’s a beautiful sentiment for a lovely decorative piece.
The talented twosome got the idea for the design when they were traveling across Europe “We were inspired by a pattern of flowers we saw on a wall somewhere,” they say. But they wanted to create more than just a pretty shape. The most exciting part about Tree-Hooked is the decoration options that it offers – it’s an extended invitation to get creative. The 22” pieces can be arranged in endless variations and can be displayed vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. They come in black, white, apple green or silver and can be mixed and matched (or not) to your heart’s delight. You are, as it were, creating your own coat rack. And it’s so gorgeous that for the summer months (when your hats, coats and gloves thankfully go into storage) it doubles as a decorative piece. “It produces a lovely picture on the wall,’ says Melka-Teichroew and Habraken. We couldn’t agree more.
