About The Bathroom

Whether by plane, train or automobile, modern travel is often more of an annoyance than an escape—and this is especially true as the holidays roll around.  But thanks to Akhassa’s Travel Indulgence kits, it’s now possible to recreate a relaxing and rejuvenating spa experience right in your hotel room—or in the guest bath at your in-laws’ place. No, really. It is.

Designed by Thai-American sisters, Lisa and Roslyn Gillespie, and based on scents they loved growing up in Thailand, Laos and Indonesia, their holistic travel kit comes in two varieties: Nurture (which promises to fortify body and mind via ylang ylang and jasmine) and Retreat (which utilizes kaffir lime and lemongrass to soothe stress and melt away muscle aches).  Both kits contain a travel-sized body lotion, shower cream, body scrub and sea salt soak that will see you through several three-to-four-day trips.

“Akhassa’s unique fragrance layering concept creates a mini spa experience on the road,” says Roslyn Gillespie, who spent over a year in Thailand developing the line with her sister and French-born, Asian-based spa consultants, Marie-Eve Cadouin and Florence Jaffre. (Akhassa is the ethereal fifth element in ancient Siamese culture that binds and balances the four tangible elements: earth, air, fire and water. Akhassa the brand is designed to bring serenity and equilibrium to the mind, body and soul.)

“With just a few products you are immersed in fragrance from pure essential oils that help center and nurture or refresh and soothe. Neither Lisa nor I are drawn to strong floral fragrances, so we wanted to create authentic essences that have a natural aroma rather than a more perfume tone. The flowers of the Nurture line are full of romance and give you a sense of calm. [And the Retreat line’s] Lemongrass is a perfect complement to Kaffir Lime. It shares the refreshing citrus scent, but carries a lighter, more grassy aroma.”

The fragrances were also chosen for their aromatherapy properties.  To wit:  Ylang Ylang is believed in Balinese culture to calm the mind, while Jasmine is said to lift depression and aid in relaxation. Lemongrass is a natural antiseptic renowned for its healing properties, and Kaffir Lime is thought to uplift one’s mood and ease tense muscles.

This we know for sure: one whiff of either kit is enough to send you on a relaxing reverie, no matter where you may happen to find yourself.  And when it comes to holiday travel, we’ll take all the help we can get.
