Artist Sophie Aschauer of SerpentSea first got the idea to transform marine rope into elaborately-woven floor mats on a sailing trip to Nantucket. Each of her mats is made of reclaimed sailing rope woven together using a melange of traditional sailors' knots. Each weighty mat takes about four hours and 150 feet of rope to assemble in Aschauer's Manhattan apartment and is named for a different pirate. Their textured surface and compact size make them excellent—and unusual—bath mats.
