Handbag designer Malini Murjani's collections “stay true to my roots,” she says. Her designs reflect her love of travel and the occasions that come up in her own life, whether that’s a special clutch for a gala or an everyday mommy tote for hanging out with her six month-old daughter. 

What inspired you to create the Megan clutch?
I found a beautiful resin comb at a flea market years ago and this season decided to experiment and design a chic but timeless clutch in the same material.

How was it made?
I am constantly looking for a small clutch to wear out for a fun night that fits all my essentials—i.e. Blackberry, lip gloss, keys and credit card. I loved this as it is small but expands like an accordion to fit everything! I fell in love with the resin as it is exotic looking. I trimmed it with Napa leather to make it feel even more luxurious.

What was the big aha! you had while creating this product?
My big aha! moment came when I was sourcing the resin to create the Megan. The colors which I was able to develop were vast and such fun to play with. I was amazed with the value of this material and the bag itself.

Can you describe your creative process?
My creative process often starts in the shower…I now have a waterproof note pad in there to write my thoughts down. And I love to travel, which always provides a constant stream of inspiration for me. 

What do you love about what you do?
I love the creative freedom I have when designing. 

How would you sum up your aesthetic/design philosophy?
Creativity is always at its zenith when it comes from a deeply personal place. This line is what I live by. This collection is a direct result of all that, a reflection of my lifestyle, and a constant osmosis from one culture to another. 

What are you working on next?
I am designing a line exclusively for QVC and was recently part of their “25 New Designers to Watch,” a collaboration I am very enthusiastic about.

What would you like to do other than your current occupation?
It’s difficult to think of anything other than fashion, as I have been obsessed with it since I was 6 years old. But my other obsession is eating, so I would love to be a food critic.
