Marcella Echavarria travels the world to weave a tapestry of forgotten cultures, talent, tradition and meaning. She works with artisans around the world to preserve their craft and enhance profitability, linking developing communities to developed markets.

 

Echavarria’s clients include the UN, USAID, the IFC, Technoserve, the OAS, Colombia, México, Cadex Bolivia, Bavaria Colombia, Repsol Bolivia and Vista Alegre Brazil. She has spoken at the International Development Bank, the Foro Artesanal FONART, FAFA in Kenya and DNA South Africa. She also taught a class on Small Enterprise Development at the BBA Program in Design and Management in 2011.

 

Her passions include storytelling, photography, design, innovation, travel and sustainable development, from which she founded SURevolution, a sustainable fashion company with a strong domestic presence. Her life’s journey is about building bridges and translating emotion into words and images.

If I had $20, I'd… Donate it as a microloan from Kiva, non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty.

 

Transformative travel experience: I was recently in Burkina Faso and felt the energy of West Africa, the collage of colors, religions, tribes, foods, smells, past, present and future... amazing!

 

Favorite neighborhood: Nolita in New York because it embraces all possible worlds in one street.

 

Dream holiday: Anywhere in the world where the three "s"—space, solitude and silence—coexist in harmony.

 

If I could solve one problem, it would be: Poverty.

 

I wish people cared more about: Each other.

 

Recent aha! moment: That "no" is a possible word.

 

The world would be a better place if: People said what they mean and mean what they say.
