THE STORY
In 1924, the Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld received an unusual commission: He was asked to create a house without walls. The design he came up with, the Rietveld Shröder House in Utrecht, is now considered a masterpiece of the De Stijl movement. The form-shattering Shröder House is the inspiration for this modernist dollhouse from Brinca Dada, which knocks the accepted dollhouse form—a stack of rooms that have no inside/outside relationship—and knocks it on its side as neatly as Rietveld’s iconic house toppled traditional ideas about architecture. More than just a pretty façade, its flowing space invites play whether the house is open or closed, while its CARB-certified wood and non-toxic, lead-free paints and stains make it eco-friendly. “Toys should be beautiful and fun,” say Brinca Dada founders Doug Rollins and Tim Boyle. “That’s why we design toys that parents love to look at and children love to play with.”
