Nothing matches the warm, tactile feeling of wood—it elevates every object crafted from it. Take these Takumi Macinari mechanical pencils from IDEA International. A pleasure to hold (and behold) and perfectly balanced, they make writing even mundane things like to-do lists aesthetically satisfying.

Except for the lead in the pencil, these beautiful writing instruments are handmade entirely from wood, a process that’s so labor-intensive that only 100 are produced each month. The downside of this old-world style production method is that it’s not exactly cost-effective. These pencils have been discontinued—we’ve got the last batch, and we don’t have many.
The pencils were designed by Hosei Suzuki, a motor vehicle engineer who wanted to showcase wood as an industrial rather than a crafts material. To prove his point, he intentionally made these pencils as straight and mechanical looking as possible, an engineering feat that required him to build a special cutting machine.
We’re offering the mechanical pencil in maple and walnut. All colors are natural, with no painting or coating. Each pencil comes packaged in a craft paper sleeve with illustrated instructions in English and Japanese.
These aren’t just pencils, they’re design icons—and environmentally responsible ones, at that. Now that’s something to write home about.
We also offer wood ballpens from the same line.
