Lying on the sand and watching the waves just got a major style overhaul: The Beach Brelli, an Asian-inspired, biodegradable sun shade that offers 99 percent UVA/UVB/UVC protection, may just be the most fashionable thing to happen to the beach since the bikini.

Like the Brelli, which we featured previously, the Beach Brelli is completely green—it’s made of lightweight, remarkably strong and easily regenerated bamboo (which is rapidly becoming our favorite material for building pretty much anything); biodegradable plastic; and organic cotton string. The generous plastic canopy is a smidge thicker than the umbrella variety—6 mm versus 4 mm—and is tinted a pale grey.

To make it easy to plant in the sand the Beach Brelli is equipped with an extension pole with a threaded spike on the bottom. If you’re stuck in town, plant it in your garden or a potted plant on a terrace. To make it even more versatile, the pole is sized to fit any umbrella base, so you can use it with your existing patio set. And if it’s windy, no need to fret—the canopy features a wind vent for stability.
