We’ve got the perfect present for somone who grills: a numbered, limited edition (30 will be made) reindeer leather apron from Böle, a fourth generation tannery and saddle maker in the far north of Sweden, whose clients include the Swedish Royal Family.

Reindeer skin is strong, lightweight and incredibly durable. At Böle—where the leather tanners all wear this traditional type of protection for their clothing—some reindeer aprons have been in service since the 1950s. In fact, that’s what inspired Jan Sandlund, whose grandfather founded Böle, to create this Old World style. More practically, reindeer leather offers better protection from heat and is less likely to catch fire than cloth. And over time, the skins take on a beautiful patina.

Böle prepares its leather using the ancient bark tanning technique, in which leather is cured in vats filled with bark (Böle uses spruce which gives it a very nice natural color) for nearly a year. Though this is the oldest known form of tanning, very few tanneries still use it.
