The one-speed free wheel Bamboocycle UH-02 C+ is the brainchild of Diego Cárdenas, a Mexico City-based designer and cycling enthusiast who regards bamboo as the material of the future. It’s easy to see why: Known as “steel grass,” it’s not only light—the Bamboocycle is about a third of the weight of a traditional bike—but requires very little energy to harvest.

Bamboo generates 30 percent more oxygen than trees, can regenerate without replanting, has a root structure that prevents soil erosion, requires no pesticides and grows so easily that even drought and floods don’t slow it down.
