Why did you curate the Fantasy Arts of Nature?

"My dear friend, the brilliant designer Eduardo Garza has given his own take on the fantasy genre, embellishing nature just enough to enhance and highlight its beauty. His inspiration often comes to him in his dreams, which, happily for us, he then translates to the waking world with an ultra chic classic/contemporary aesthetic."

THE STORY

Do butterflies have social lives? It’s the sort of gently fantastical question that artist Eduardo Garza, whose magical limited edition art pieces are inspired by the natural world, asks himself. For though his studio is in New York City, Garza’s mind is in the clouds—as well as the woods and the ocean, all places in which he finds the raw material for his glass butterfly domes, copper-dipped ostrich eggs and gold-plated sea fans. For those urban creatures amongst us—if your idea of communing with nature means walking to the deli, we’re talking to you—Garza’s delicate creations are stylish reminders of the beauty of flora and fauna.

These nature’s sculptures are meticulously sourced (from ethically sourced and organic materials only), painstakingly handcrafted and extravagantly embellished with the finest material available. Each object tells the story of an intensely personal vision and is signed by the artist. The magical glass-domed Butterfly Gathering, is made in a limited edition of three (which is the number that Garza always uses for his limited editions) and comes signed and numbered. For the motif, Garza imagined a “joyful green butterfly reunion staged in a magical giant beetle’s garden.” “I’m fascinated with the idea of insects having a ‘social life’ and the fantastic idea that they have celebrations of some sort,” he says.

Since nature only creates one-of-kind butterflies, each butterfly dome has slight variations. His Copper Ostrich Egg plays with ideas of change and time by taking an ostrich egg—an age-old symbol of life and rebirth—and dipping it in copper that’s then oxidized, a process that, though not immediately apparent, is ongoing. “So, in a sense, the egg is alive,” Garza explains. His 24kt Dipped Sea Fan, meanwhile, honors the unusual beauty of these plant-like micro-civilizations by gilding them. And that, like everything he makes, puts a whole different spin on Keats’ observation that, “a thing of beauty is a joy forever.”
