why this product

These durable utensils can be used daily, and yet still set a beautiful table for special occasions. The design has a notable history: in the summer of 1951, the British government organized a nation-wide exhibition promoting innovations in science, technology, industry, architecture, arts and design in efforts to reinvigorate the country and its citizens after the devastation of World War II. The exhibition inspired legendary designer David Mellor to design this sleek and modern set of flatware in 1953. He titled the set “Pride” and the flatware continues to be created in the same historical factory where the original set was made. A mix of advanced machinery and hand-finishing by expert metalworkers is required to create these stainless steel utensils.

production & design

Born in 1930 in Sheffield, England, a city known for its medieval roots in metal production, David Mellor began training as a silversmith from the age of eleven years old. While still a student at the Royal College of Art in London, he designed his first cutlery set—this Pride flatware—which went on to win many design awards and remains a popular table setting to this day. Throughout his lifetime Mellor also designed public necessities such as bus shelters as well as cutlery for the army and hospitals—this eventually led to the production of his own signature lines of silverware, earning him the nickname “the cutlery king.” In 1965, he reworked the national traffic light system, and those traffic signals continue to monitor the flow of traffic on the streets of the UK today. After his death in 2009, David Mellor’s son, Corin, took the helm of the storied company that his father founded.
