From a cup of fresh orange juice in the morning, to a refreshing glass of cold water with lunch, to whiskey on the rocks in the evening, these versatile glass tumblers will hold your beverages with ease. La Rochère, a French a glass company with roots that reach as far back as 1475, creates these glasses through the process of pressing glass. A drop of precisely measured molten glass is placed into a mold, then pressed into a shape with a plunger. The pressed glassware is cooled by ventilated air before being annealed, a process that fortifies and strengthens the material by slowly cooling the glass in a temperature controlled kiln.
These glasses are dishwasher safe.
La Rochère, set in the picturesque commune of Passavant-la-Rochère in eastern France, is the oldest glass company in all of Europe. The area’s surrounding forests provide natural materials needed to fuse the glass, such as silica, sand and soil, along with firewood and ferns to heat the furnaces. In 1475, glassmaker Simon de Thysac started a glass foundry specializing in glass windows. The foundry enjoyed success for over a century, until the village was completely destroyed by a fire in 1595. The glassworks was rebuilt three years later, though business halted again during the Thirty Years’ War. In 1666, the furnaces were re-lit, and they have been burning continuously ever since. ?Although proud of their heritage and history, La Rochère also works to update their processes with the latest technology in order to increase productivity and efficiency amongst their relatively small 145-person staff. For nearly a decade, La Rochère has been working to implement environment-minded practices which significantly reduce the use of energy, chemicals and water.
