The hori hori (which means “dig dig”) was invented by the Japanese to carefully harvest delicate mountain vegetables and roots—such as wasabi—from dense, rocky soil. The tool has now become a favorite among gardeners in many regions and climates for its ability to perform multiple tasks. The pointed tip easily penetrates tough or packed soils. The concave, trough-like shape of the blade not only transplants dirt for planting, it also helps to dislodge stalwart weeds with thick, deep roots. The hori hori is well-suited to finer jobs too: the inch and millimeter marks etched into the stainless steel blade provide accuracy in planting seeds or bulbs; the sharp blade edge cuts grass and trims plants. A stainless steel blade resists rust and oxidation. The handle is made of tamo-wood, a Japanese wood comparable to white ash, though the grain patterns have the unique appearance of being shaped like peanut shells. Double rivets of the on the handle ensure that the tool will remain stable even when you are digging in difficult soil.
Rinse blade and dry well after each use. This tool should be kept away from children’s reach.
