why this product

Prolific and esteemed industrial designer Naoto Fukusawa, whose work can be found in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, designed this reusable envelope for a Japanese paper company. Made from Japanese washi (“wa” meaning Japanese or harmony; “shi” referring to its fine, handmade quality) and a thermoplastic called polyolefin, the material yields and wrinkles over time to resemble weathered leather. This proprietary material—named Naoron, after its designer—is waterproof and strong enough to withstand up to 20 pounds. It can accommodate your important documents, an iPad, a folded wet umbrella or your heaviest volume of leisure reading.

use & care

Do not store wet items in the envelope for extended periods of time, as this will degrade the integrity of the material.

production & design

Internationally celebrated industrial designer Naoto Fukusawa (b. 1956) has worked with leading companies around the world to create some of the most desired items on the market, including furniture for Herman Miller and Vitra, and appliances such as toasters and rice cookers that approach art objects in their streamlined appearance. Exploring the impact that everyday objects have on our lives, Fukusawa and fellow designer Jasper  Morrison published Super Normal in 2007, isolating 204 instances of design in which the understated and the mundane are the basis of elegance and efficiency. The anonymity in aesthetic often leads to longstanding, classic designs that have remained in use for decades. This unassuming yet useful envelope is a good example of “super normal” design principles, wherein a humble appearance fosters functionality and the endurance of a product.
