An intricate, woven lattice structure lends these towels extra absorbency and softness. Fine cotton threads are blended with just a touch of natural ramie, a vegetable fiber so strong that it was used to wrap mummies in ancient Egypt. To make these hand towels, delicate threads are slowly woven on old-fashioned, low-speed looms in a factory in Japan that’s been in operation since 1934. The towels are finished with a thorough laundering, using the wellsprings of underground water from the melted snows of Mount Ishizuchi, the tallest mountain in Western Japan. Machine wash in cold water using a mild detergent. Hang dry or tumble dry on low or gentle cycle. Do not use bleach.
Since 1934, this Japanese company has been using old-fashioned looms to produce some of the softest towels, home linens and sleepwear available. The key to the softness is due to fine, loosely twisted threads. The company’s dedication to delicate materials means that high-speed looms and other modern technologies are out of the question, as this machinery would break the fine threads. To create further softness and absorbency, the textiles are laundered with natural detergents, such as orange oil, using wellspring water from the melted snows of nearby Mount Ishizuchi.
