why this product

A former architect-turned-furniture designer teamed up with skilled Nicaraguan craftsmen to create this multipurpose piece, inspired by vintage kitchen step stools of the 1950s. While sturdy enough to be used as a step stool in the kitchen or playroom, it also makes an attractive and practical side table for the living room or bedroom. Slotted panels in the stool’s two rungs can be slid up to display books, or pulled down to store tools and keep other objects discreetly out of sight. The step stool is made with old growth lumber from 300-year-old Nanciton trees that were felled during the destruction of Hurricane Felix in 2007. The dark brown wood has a slight purplish tint with a consistent, straight grain pattern. Its color will darken over time to resemble walnut.

use & care

Lightly condition the step stool once a year or as needed with wood furniture oil, such as our Beeswax Wood Care & Finish. Allow to soak for 24 hours before wiping off excess and buffing dry with a soft cotton cloth.

production & design

Designer Aaron Poritz has a background in sustainable architecture, and he brings these ecological considerations to his current furniture studio. His furniture uses materials sourced from responsibly farmed coffee and teak plantations, as well as felled wood salvaged from Hurricane Felix of 2007. All his furniture is handmade with a select group of skilled craftsmen in Nicaragua, just outside the capital city of Managua. Craftsmen work in fair conditions and are compensated ethically with health insurance and fair wages. Currently, Aaron works with four craftsmen and four apprentices to manufacture his designs.
